Rolling-Hunting – Eastern District

Overview

Sustainable small ideas to keep community love going

Compared to many newly developed communities in Hong Kong, the Eastern District of Hong Kong Island has a long history and is very maturely developed. Although there have not been many large-scale infrastructure projects in recent years, there are many small sustainable ideas hidden in the district: such as solar panels hidden in park benches, water features with sound insulation functions, second-hand book exchanges in the community, etc. They may look inconspicuous but they subtly continue the community’s sustainable development in green living and cohesive culture.

Route Highlights

Quarry Bay Park – Solar panel design for seats in the plaza
The seats in the park were designed by the Hong Kong Arts Centre and Public Art Hong Kong in collaboration with local artists. They are artistic and creative. The solar panels attached to the stool convert solar energy into electricity to power the lighting fixtures.

Aldrich Bay Park – Water Features
Built with natural materials such as bamboo and wood, as well as eco-friendly bricks, the water feature is more than just a decoration; it also serves as a noise barrier to block out the noise of traffic along the busy East Corridor.

Siu Sai Wan Island Resort Mall Ground Floor – One Pile intelligent book crossing system
During the life cycle of a book, carbon emissions are generated from logging, paper production, printing and binding, transportation and packaging to post-reading processing. Therefore, exchanging second-hand books can not only promote community inclusion and knowledge dissemination, but also reduce carbon emissions from purchasing new books.
